A coaching session at the IDEA League PhD School in Guangzhou

Phd candidates from around Europe visited Guangzhou and Singapore in November 2014 as part of the IDEA League PhD School on ‘urban systems’. Professor Han Meyer and Yuting Tai of urban design organised the Guangzhou visit. ┬áSpatial Planning played an important part in the Guangzhou visit through our existing cooperation programme. Colleagues in Guangzhou including Professor Sun Yimin and Professor Zhou Jianyun introduced the visitors to Guangzhou, and Vincent Nadin gave well received presentations on comparative research and academic publication. The School started in August 2014 with a visit to Delft and will end in February in Aaachen. The Future Cities Lab of ETH Zurich organised the Singapore visit. PhD candidates from different disciplines are being exposed to the very different conditions for urban development in Rotterdam, Singapore and Guangzhou, and will prepare an interdisciplinary paper on an aspect of complex urban systems. The best papers will make a special edition of the journal Built Environment. Feedback shows that the PhD candidates have benefitted hugely from the study visits and a big thanks goes to our hosts in Guangzhou and Singapore including the helpers at SCUT – Sam and David.
