Book launch: More Perspectives on Designing Cities for All

Book launch: More Perspectives on Designing Cities for All

The call for a fair, safe and healthy living environment for everyone.

In 2021, Pakhuis de Zwijger’s extensive two-year program Designing Cities for All commenced with the support of the Creative Industry Fund NL. This program focuses on the role of designers in shaping and creating cities for, by and with everyone. The key question for the 2021-2022 activity program is:

In the context of the super-diverse city, how can designers contribute to the creation of inclusive cities for, by and with everyone.

The past two years were marked by some deeply disruptive developments on the international stage – the Covid-19 pandemic, Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine and the very recent devastating heatwaves in India and Pakistan, to name a few. As a result, more than ever before, exclusion by design surfaces on the micro, meso and macro level. Our systems were not designed to catch us in the event of catastrophe. At least, not all of us.

At Pakhuis de Zwijger’s programme series Designing Cities for All (DCFA), we’ve spent the last two years examining the extent, the consequences and some possible solutions for this concept of ‘exclusion by design’. Following four filled-to-the-brim seasons and the first edition of our essay book in 2021 (read 18 Perspectives on Designing Cities for All online here), we are proud to present our second DCFA book! More Perspectives on Designing Cities for All is a brand new collection of essays by designers, urbanists and other experts in the plethora of fields in which designing for all is (or should be) at the fore.

Essays by:
Leslie Kern, Daphina Misiedjan, Oluwatomilola Adefioye, Wing Yan Man, Tadzio Bervoets, Anna Noyons, Shay Raviv, Darko Lagunas, Radha D’Souza, Stacy Mac Donald, Designalism, OneWorld, Setareh Noorani, de Chrononauten, Yelizaveta Strakhova and Roberto Rocco.

The publication marks the end of the second year of Designing Cities for All, Pakhuis de Zwijger’s extensive two-year programme commenced with the support of the Creative Industry Fund NL. This programme focuses on the role of designers in shaping and creating cities for, by and with everyone. A great diversity of talent was involved: designers, scientists, experts, educational institutions and others participated, next to a total of six Fellows to curate part of the programme — to share their knowledge, to work together, and inspire each other to build inclusive solutions from the ground up.
